The Irish Photographic Society hold distinction awards twice per year and both Carl Farmer and Sarah Murphy have achieved their Licentiateship.

Since the early 1800’s there have been side shows to the main event in the big top circus. As time progressed into the Victorian age these became known as ‘Freak Shows’

In my panel I wanted to bring a modern twist to the shows that captured the imagination of millions. I have endeavoured to recreate some of the biggest acts to tour the world though the early 19^th century with the help of Models, Makeup Artists and lighting.

In my ‘Freak Show’ you will find, a Bearded Lady, an Escapologist, a Sword Swallower, Siamese twins, a Tattooed lady, a Contortionist, a He/She and many more.

I have taken inspiration from the signed greeting cards that each act would sell after their show depicting them in their chosen performance. Through the use of lighting and a stage, I hope that I have brought some of these forgotten acts back to life. The stage, set and lighting were all recreated in the studio, and where possible real props were used instead of post processing.
